  It was a real delight to get this latest book from the growing Mushroom Models Publications library. This one is in their orange series and is on the Italian Macchi C.200 Saeta. The Saeta was one of the R.A.s first monoplane, retractable landing gear fighters. It was chosen in a competition with the Ro.51 and the Fiat G.50. Though superior to the G.50 in most aspects, the G.50 was also chosen for production while the Ro.51 was hopelessly outclassed.

  Though originally built with a fully enclosed canopy, there were issues in getting it open at speed, which would make it difficult for a pilot to bail out if there were issues. As a result, like the G.50, a more open cockpit was developed for the aircraft and though it changed in design during production, was a staple of the aircraft throughout its production life.

  Armed with twin 12.5mm machine guns, these were fairly capable guns and in combat with most aircraft during the war, were sufficient. Italian production rates being what they were, there were never really enough aircraft to meet all the needs. The airframe, however, was a good one and was the basis for the more capable C.202 and C.205 aircraft. Several C.200 aircraft survived after the Italian capitulation in September 1943 and served on both sides, though normally as trainers.

  As with all books in this series, in addition to a strong history section, there are sections that show the inside story of the aircraft. Thankfully, there are two fully restored airframes; one in the US at the USAF museum and the other in Italy at the Italian AF museum. This means a raft of well taken color images of various parts of the aircraft.

  One major bonus to this book is a lot of period color images. Apparently the Italians took advantage of the then-new color film and we are able to see these planes as they really were. In addition to all the technical information, you will find the usual bevy of color profiles, appropriately sprinkled through the book in the appropriate areas. A full series of plans in both 1/72 and 1/48 scale round out another superb package.

  Like other MMP books, this one is all any modeler or aircraft enthusiast needs on the type. Another outstanding edition and one I give my highest recommendation.

  Make this compact compendium your guide to modeling ITALERI's 1:48 Macchi C.200 Saetta.

  The matchless Jose Fernandez distills the whole spellbinding story of Italy's nimble monoplane into 112 pithy pages – most in color.

  MMP's absorbing account moves from design and development through production to Saetta service in Africa, the Balkans, the USSR, and Italy – including postwar use. Contents course through valuable variant notes, tasty technical details and exciting aircrew anecdotes. And a convenient catalog of camouflage schemes clarifies Macchi markings.

  Dozens of vintage color and B&W photos – including technical manual excerpts and details of preserved Saettas – season this sumptuous study. Striking color profiles by the late, great Teodor Liviu Morosanu roused my modeling muse. And 1:48 and 1:72 plans beautifully augment coverage.

  I utterly enjoyed this handy handbook.

  MMP’s Orange series is building up into a bit of a one-stop-shop in terms of reference material relating to specific aircraft subjects as does the Yellow series and what a reference resource this is. You can sum this title up in one word – comprehensive!

  This is the most recent Orange Series title from MMP and describes the Macchi C.200 Saetta (also known as the MC.200), a WWII fighter aircraft built by Aeronautica Macchi in Italy. It was used in many forms throughout the Regia Aeronautica (Italian Air Force). The C200 had excellent manoeuvrability and the general flying characteristics left little to be desired. It was slower than its contemporaries and opponents but was still used in all theatres of operations by the RA, from Russia to North Africa, the design led directly to the impressive C.202 and C.205, the best Italian fighters of the War.

  The end. vThe quality of the colour profiles is very high as is presentation and production throughout. There are all-aspect line drawing plans that are first rate and when you put all that with the colour period and black and white images you simply have a winner!

  Several kits are currently available for the Saetta in 1:72 and 1:48 so there’s no excuse not to have a go at one of the great Italian schemes – challenging? Yes, but what a model can result!

  　最近のMMPの本であるFieseler 156 Storch 1938-1945が176頁もあるのに比較して本書が運用歴も含めて112頁と言うのは物足りない印象です。

  構成は

  ・開発史4頁(この中で競合したフィアットG50、メルディオナリRo51との比較試験があり、G50とは速度と上昇率でMC200が勝り、運動性はG50の方が勝っていたそうで、これが勝者をMC200に絞り切れなかった要因のようですMediterranean Air War, 1940-1945: Volume One: North Africa, June 1940-january 1942では格闘戦でハリケーンやキティホークの内側に回り込めるだけの運動性があるという証言があるので後知恵ですがMC200で十分だったようですが)

  ・生産中の改造(生産と製造番号のリストも含めて)2頁

  これ以外に本文には1/72スケールでサエッタの型式毎の線図(1機分だけ上下面図がありますが、その他は側面図だけです)また現存機は勿論、第二次大戦当時のカラー写真も10枚程度収録されています。 また付録として1/48のセリエ7の5面図や初期型、戦闘爆撃機型の線図が付いています。

  　実績、人気の点でも後継のMC202フォルゴーレの方が上ですが、私はMC200の方が個性的な形状で好きです。 その思い入れが強いのでやや肩透かしの様な感じがして☆1つ減らしています、でも悪い本ではありません。

  MC200はViva! 知られざるイタリア軍(武装強化型の7.7mm機銃の装備位置を主翼下としていますが、フォルゴーレと同じ主翼を使用した翼内装備です)にも収録されていますが英語に抵抗を感じず、もう少し情報を得たい読者にはお薦めします。

  The Italian air force during the Second World War flew quite an eclectic collection of aircraft, ranging from useful foreign aircraft such as the Bf 109 and Ju 87 to their own indigenous designs, culminating in the superlative Fiat G.55 and Macchi C.205. The ancestor to the latter, the Macchi C.200 Saetta, was the aircraft many Italian pilots cut their teeth with, engaging in battle against the Allied forces and then shifting to the training role. Well over a thousand were built, and the type remained in service in some form or another until the end of the war, with a small number remaining in service until 1947.

  This newest title in the Mushroom Orange Series examines the Macchi C.200 Saetta in detail, including scale drawings and color artwork. The text is well written and covers the development and production of the aircraft. In a different manner than other titles from Mushroom, this book has the color profiles interspersed throughout the book, breaking up the pages of text and photos. While this does make it a bit more challenging to find a specific illustration, I did notice that it made me read more of the text as I flipped through the book, so ultimately this is a good thing in terms of learning more about the subject.

  For photos, the book includes both black and white and color images from the Second World War, as well as color photos of museum examples. The latter do a great job of showing details of various sections, and will be of great use to scale modelers. Also of use are the scale drawings, which are provided in 1/72 in the pages and 1/48 in a separate pull-out sheet.

  Overall, this is an excellent book on the Macchi C.200 Saetta, and anyone interested in Italian aviation and the Regia Aeronautica during the Second World War should definitely pick this title up.

  The Macchi C.200 was the best fighter Italy could align against the Allies in 1940 and 1941 until the arrival of his successor, the Macchi C.202. However, the number of books in English on this aircraft are not so many as that. The ’Orange’ series of Mushroom presents the C.200 in relatively few pages, an hundred or so, something less than usual for this series. But when leafing through the book, we can easily be impressed by the number of color profiles, over forty and the number of color photographs making probably one of the most colorful books on Italian aviation of the Second World War. If we Include the photos of aircraft museums with the usual close-ups parts, that gives without a doubt a beautiful book.

  For the text part, ’ genesis and development’ and other technical parts are well treated and complete but for the operational use of the Macchi C.200 it would have been welcomed to have much more information on its usage in North Africa where the Macchi was intensively used and where this aircraft fought the most. Indeed, it would have been very interesting to have as many details of C.200 in North Africa the author has given for the use of C.200 on the Eastern Front.

  Despite this, this book remains a good source of inspiration for modelers who would very enthusiastic in trying to reproduce the camouflage patterns which are very well described.

  Excellent MMP monograph October 4, 2012

  This is the 13th book in MMP's Orange Series (No. 8113). Like the others it is a B5 sized (6 1/2" x 9") square bound card cover with color throughout. The page count is a fairly modest 112 pages. I am happy to report that the cover photo is indeed a color photo and not a colorized black and white photo.

  The book has all the features usually found in this series. There are sections detailing the design and development, testing, service introduction, and combat history. The combat history is supplemented by two sidebars with interesting personal reminiscences of pilots in Russia and North Africa. In addition there is a comprehensive technical description, production table, camouflage table, and specification table. The highlight of these books for me is always the section showing the details of the aircraft with color photos of surviving examples supplemented by period photos and technical documentation.

  Graphically, the book has 29 pages of color profiles with some color plan views. As has become the norm with recent MMP releases these are scattered throughout the book instead of collected a the back. There are the usual fine line drawings with the 1/72nd scale drawings in the book proper and the 1/48th scale drawings on an unbound foldout. If buying secondhand make sure this is included. An unusual feature of these Macchi fighters is the different left and right wing spans to counter engine torque. The drawings capture this perfectly. There are no 1/32nd scale drawings no doubt due to a lack of kits in this scale.

  Interestingly for an aircraft of this period there are a large number of period color photographs included in this volume. Whether availability or MMP policy was the reason for this I don't know but it is a welcome feature.

  Highly recommended. If you like previous MMP titles in this series you should like this one. There is a future volume planned for the Macchi C.202. I look forward to it and hope that the contemporary Fiat monoplane fighters and Reggiane fighters also get covered in due course.

  This new book came directly from Stratus, packed in a padded envelope with a stiff sheet of cardboard to protect it.

  The book is soft-cover and 112 pages in 6 ½” x 9” page format.

  The Macchi C.200 Saetta was a WWII Italian fighter aircraft built by Aeronautica Macchi and used throughout the Regia Aeronautica (Italian Royal Air Force). The C.200 was highly maneuverable an a popular aircraft with its pilots.

  This book describes and illustrates the design and development of this fighter. The design, development and operations of these aircraft is covered in detail, illustrated with many unpublished rare color as well as black and white photgraphs. It contains full color detail and restoration photos of preserved aircraft, and details from the technical manuals. Additionally, there are also superb color illustrations of the camouflage and markings. There are also scale line drawing plans in 1/72nd and 1/48th scales.

  The rare color wartime photos and the color ones that are walk-rounds taken in museums number 74. There are 60 black and white wartime photos.

  There are 9 1/72nd scale line drawings in the book. One of these is a 3-view.

  There are 50 color profile illustrations throughout the book. Four of these are done as 3-views. In addition to the ones in Facist markings there is one each in captured British, captured U.S. and one in Italian co-beligerent markings used after the 1943 armistist.

  There are 2 data charts and 37 illustrations out of technical manuals.

  There is a folded up loose sheet insterted into the book that has 1/48th scale line drawings on either side of it. These show 7 different series marks of the C.200 and one illustration is a 5-view.

  This has got to be the definitive book on the C.200 and a great companion to Mushroom Model Publications (MMP) book on the Macchi C.202, which was the sucessor to the 200 and also another book by MMP.

  The back cover of the book has the cover arts for 3 other books that MMP publishes: “The Macchi C.202 Folgore”, “The Fieseler Fi 156 Storch 1938-1945” and “The North American A-36A Apache”.

  Highly recommended and will be of interest to aviaton historians as well as scale modelers.

  This book in the Orange Series from MMP describes the Italian WWII Macchi C.200 Saetta, or MC.200. The Saetta was a fighter aircraft built in Italy and flown by the Regia Aeronautica during WWII. The C.200 was well loved by its pilots for its excellent maneuverability, and the design was the basis for the later C.202 and C.205 fighters.

  This excellent book covers all aspects of the MC.200’s design, development, and operational use of this fighter. Included within is a wealth of information for the plastic modeler, as well as the general aviation historian. All text in the book is in English.

  The book’s 112 pages are packed with photos and excellent color profiles detailing the various camouflage schemes the aircraft wore during WWII. The vintage photographs in this book are of high quality, and appear to be new to this publication. I have various other books which cover the MC.200 and there are quite a few images I have not seen before. Photographs are included from the pre-war development through all theaters where the MC.200 saw action. These include early production aircraft through those of the war years. There are many vintage color photos used here from WWII, as well as some black and white images. Also included are some good detail photos (all in color) of surviving and restored Saetta aircraft.

  Another welcome feature of this book is the color profiles. The illustration is very well done, and the printing is excellent. The plastic modeler will find these very useful and may inspire him to build more than one model of this aircraft. Examples are shown in just about every camouflage scheme used on the airframe, and (a surprise to me) included are profiles showing several captured aircraft (one used by US Forces and one by the British). All of the camouflage schemes are detailed and described, and there is a useful chart of colors for the modeler to refer to.

  Also intertwined throughout the book are images taken from the technical manual for the aircraft, so the modeler gets a vintage perspective on some of the components. Last, but not least, this book also includes plan drawings in both 1/48 and 1/72 scale. The 1/48 plans are included in a separate fold-out, and the 1/72 plans are printed throughout the book.

  I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in aviation history, Italian WWII aircraft, or a plastic modeler looking for some detailed information on this famous fighter. For the price you will not be able to find a more complete reference on this aircraft. Many thanks to Mushroom Models Publications for providing the book and IPMS-USA for allowing me to review it.

  Książka ilustrowana jest rysunkami z instrukcji, 79 czarno-białymi i 15 barwnymi zdjęciami z epoki oraz barwnymi współczesnymi zdjęciami zachowanych egzemplarzy. Fotografie zostały dobrane starannie z myślą o pokazaniu detali konstrukcji, wiele z nich jest unikalnych. Dla modelarza to nieocenione źródło informacji o detalach konstrukcji, sposobach malowania, śladach eksploatacji czy wreszcie inspiracja do dioram.

  Modelarską wyobraźnię inspirować może również 50 profili barwnych. Pokazano na nich nie tylko maszyny włoskiej Regia Aeronautica z Afryki Północnej, Włoch i Frontu Wschodniego, ale również używane przez lotnictwo włoskie współpracujące z Aliantami oraz maszyny zdobyte przez USA i Wielką Brytanię. Podsumowanie

  Lotnictwo włoskie nie jest w Polsce szczególnie popularne, więc i publikacji mamy niewiele. Pierwszą wydaną w Polsce był zeszyt TBiU sprzed ćwierć wieku. Ta jest tak naprawdę drugą napisaną w przystępnym i znanym większości języku. Na dodatek otrzymujemy opracowanie przydatne przy budowie i waloryzacji modeli, których w ostatnich latach na rynku nam przybyło. Zakup książki polecam, nabywcy nie będą zawiedzeni.
